Nashville visitors

Are you planning on heading to the country music capital for the first time? Well, you are surely in for a mighty great time. From the lively music scene, the best whiskey in Tennessee, and mouth watering soul food that the south is known for, this will be an experience and a trip of a lifetime. As you plan for such a magnificent trip, continue to read to discover the 10 mistakes first-timers make when visiting Nashville. Avoid them when you can to make your trip seamless and well worth the time!

1. Staying too far from downtown

I would recommend that you stay downtown if possible. Yes, there may be more cost efficient options further out, but if you’re planning on spending the majority of your time downtown, it will be worth the money. The money that you will spend on transportation to get downtown will exceed, or cost more than the money you save on the hotel to stay further out.

2. Not taking advantage of shuttles/transportation from the hotel

In connection with number 1, consider looking into hotels that offer free shuttle options. Call before booking to confirm if the hotel has the option to not only pick you up from the airport if you’re flying in, but also shuttle options to get you downtown. This will allow you to save money on rideshares, cabs, or any other options that will cost you more money. You will also feel more comfortable to have fun, relax, and be fully immersed in Nashville without the worry of how you’ll get back to your hotel.

3. Not exploring beyond Broadway

Yes, Broadway is a must see; but it’s not the only thing to see in Nashville. There’s plenty of beautiful places to visit and make memories such as East Nashville, 12 South, Germantown, and The Gulch - just to name a few! Before you go, make sure to research nearby restaurants and get your reservation. Why? Read number 4.

4. Not making reservations

Something major that gets overlooked are reservations. Depending on what season and time of year you’re planning your visit, restaurants will most likely have lines out of the door. You can avoid this hassle by making a reservation at your desired restaurant(s) right after you book your hotel. This ensures that you have a table ready to enjoy some of the best meals that Nashville has to offer.

5. Not knowing WHEN to visit Nashville

When you visit Nashville truly does make a big difference. Summers are hot and Spring Break is busy with college students. You want to make sure you visit when the weather and temperature is just right - and students are in school. You’ll also want to avoid holiday seasons, and big events like CMA Fest, concerts, and sports games such as football and hockey.

6. Dressing in Country attire

Granted, Nashville is known for its iconic cowboy/cowgirl hats and cowboy/cowgirl boots, but dressing in such - especially when walking for a far distance - will more than likely be uncomfortable. I highly recommend grabbing each on your trip to take back home to always have a piece of Nashville with you, but be sure to dress comfortably while you’re there. Don’t forget to check the weather to make sure you pack accordingly.

7. Begin partying hard too soon

Okay, yes, Nashville is a popular destination known for its good ole Tennessee whiskey, especially Jack Daniels. This can be exciting to the point where those traveling to Nashville for the first time are eager to dive in - sooner rather than later. But I must warn you to proceed with caution. If you do want to start early, drink in moderation and drink plenty of water. If you want to make it to the amazing and well known night life, it may be best to wait until later in the day to start celebrating your trip. The one thing we don’t want is you having a hangover or being sleepy throughout the best trip to the best city!

8. Speaking of Jack Daniels…

One of the best experiences that you can take part of during your visit is to participate in a Tennessee Whiskey Tour. There are many tours to choose from to accommodate not only one or two people, but groups as well. A few tour options include: Jack Daniel’s Distillery Tours, Nashville to Uncle Nearest Distillery Tour, Beer, BBQ, & Bourbon Tour, and many more! Check out all options here. While you’re in the planning process. Be sure to book your reservation to ensure you don’t miss out on a 5-star experience.

9. Not planning your itinerary

This goes hand in hand with making reservations ahead of time. Depending on how long you’re planning on staying in Nashville, I highly suggest that you plan your activities ahead of time as well. This way, you can have a schedule that will help you make the most of your visit. If you’re planning on utilizing the shuttle service at your hotel, as mentioned at number 2, explore all the places that it goes and the times it makes its rounds. If you’re planning on partaking in a Tennessee Whiskey Tour, make sure you know our departure time and the pickup spot! Also be sure to check out what events are happening during your visit.

10. Not enjoying the beautiful Nashville landscapes

Of course Nashville is known for its night life, whiskey, and music scene; but even more so Nashville is known for its remarkable southern landscapes and outstanding nature. At some point during your trip, take a hike, embrace the Cumberland River, or even find a majestic park to have a picnic such as Centennial Park and Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. Some of these options are no cost and beyond worthy of some of your time while you’re in Nashville.
